Seoul’s Evolving MICE Venues: A Practical Comparison for Event Planners

Seoul continues to expand its MICE infrastructure beyond the long-established Gangnam hub. Planners now have more choices for conferences, exhibitions, and incentive gatherings, supported by strong city investment and recognition as Best MICE City for multiple consecutive years. Matching the venue to event size, logistics, and delegate experience is critical.

Established and Newer Purpose-Built Centers

COEX in Samseong-dong (Gangnam) remains the flagship. It offers roughly 36,000–38,000 m² of exhibition space across halls that can host up to several hundred booths each, plus an Auditorium seating about 1,080 theater-style and a Grand Ballroom for up to around 1,800. Direct connections to hotels (including InterContinental properties), the COEX Mall, aquarium, and subway make it ideal for large international conferences and trade shows. Simultaneous interpretation and extensive AV are standard. Access is excellent via Line 2 at Samseong Station. Drawbacks include higher density and occasional traffic in the area.

COEX Magok, opened in late 2024 in Gangseo-gu, provides a modern alternative closer to Incheon Airport (about 15 km). It features approximately 7,450 m² of exhibition space (Le West Hall) and substantial meeting facilities (around 6,900 m² that can be divided into dozens of rooms). Capacities include mid-to-large halls accommodating hundreds in theater style, with hybrid capabilities and eco-focused solutions. It connects directly to a hotel and sits within a broader development. This makes it attractive for medical, technology, or regional events seeking newer facilities and easier airport access without sacrificing professionalism.

Seoul MICE Plaza in Magok, operational from late 2025, focuses on smaller-scale and flexible use. It includes a large conference room for up to about 100 people, smaller meeting rooms, a VIP lounge, and a digital nomad/workation zone. It supports hybrid meetings and is positioned for buyer meetings, executive roundtables, and long-stay business travelers. Reservations are straightforward via local platforms.

Hotels, Unique Venues, and Future Clusters

Hotel ballrooms and unique venues complement the purpose-built centers. Properties near COEX or in central areas offer ballrooms for 500–1,200 guests with strong banquet and breakout options. Unique venues (non-traditional sites with distinctive concepts) are available through the Seoul MICE Alliance for incentive programs.

Longer-term plans aim to create three major clusters by the early 2030s: southwest (Magok), central (Seoul Station/Namsan/Gwanghwamun area), and southeast (Jamsil toward COEX). This will further distribute capacity and integrate shopping, culture, and convention functions.
