How Seoul’s Main Venue Compares with Large Convention Facilities Worldwide
COEX in Seoul offers roughly 36,000–48,000 square meters of exhibition space across its halls, plus dozens of meeting rooms. It is large enough for major international events, yet it sits inside a dense urban district with direct subway access, hotels, and shopping. Facilities of this practical size and urban integration are less common than the absolute largest venues in the world.

What the Comparison Shows
Absolute scale
A small number of venues—mostly in China and Germany—far exceed COEX in raw exhibition square meters. The top tier (above 300,000–500,000 m²) is concentrated in a handful of cities. Most of the world’s 1,500+ exhibition venues are much smaller; only about 5% reach 100,000 m² or more.
Urban integration
COEX’s advantage is not pure size. It is located in central Gangnam with subway connections, adjacent hotels, and supporting infrastructure already in place. Many of the world’s largest venues are purpose-built complexes on the edge of cities and require more extensive transport planning for delegates.
Seoul’s position
Within Asia outside China, venues of COEX’s scale or larger are limited. Tokyo Big Sight, Singapore Expo, and IMPACT in Bangkok are the main peers. KINTEX near Seoul is larger, but COEX remains the primary urban convention facility inside the city. The planned Jamsil complex (targeted for 2032) is designed to add space roughly 2.5 times the size of current COEX, which would move Seoul closer to the next tier of capacity while keeping the urban setting.
Summary
True mega-venues above 200,000–300,000 m² exist in relatively few places. COEX sits in a more selective category: large enough for major international meetings and exhibitions, yet embedded in a dense, well-connected city center. That combination—usable scale plus urban practicality—is less common than the list of the absolute largest halls might suggest.
