Seoul’s 2026 MICE Push: A Practical Guide for International Planners on Venues, Logistics, Etiquette, and Bleisure

Seoul continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading MICE destinations. The city has been named Best MICE City by Global Traveler for 11 consecutive years and ranked first in Asia and third worldwide for international conferences hosted in 2024 according to the Union of International Associations. In 2026, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is investing 8.5 billion won under its MICE Industry Growth Plan to attract more large-scale events, expand support for organizers, and actively promote bleisure travel so delegates and companions stay longer and experience the city beyond the conference schedule.

Choosing the right venue is one of the most important early decisions. COEX in Gangnam remains the classic choice for most international meetings and exhibitions. It offers roughly 36,000–50,000 square meters of flexible exhibition and convention space, dozens of meeting rooms, and seamless integration with luxury hotels, the large Starfield COEX Mall, an aquarium, and a cinema. Subway Lines 2 (Samseong) and 9 (Bongeunsa) connect directly to the complex. COEX Magok, which opened in late 2024 in southwestern Seoul, is smaller but highly practical for airport-heavy programs. It features about 7,452 square meters of exhibition space plus roughly 6,900 square meters of meeting rooms, including a large divisible hall that can seat up to around 2,200 people, and it sits in the same complex as a hotel. Magongnaru Station (Airport Railroad and Line 9) provides direct underground access, and the venue is only about 15 km from Incheon International Airport. KINTEX in Goyang (Ilsan area) is South Korea’s largest exhibition center, with more than 108,000 square meters of indoor exhibition space across two main halls and strong floor loads suitable for heavy equipment. It is ideal for major trade shows and is reachable in roughly 30–40 minutes from central Seoul via the GTX-A line or other transit options, with further expansion underway.

Venue Approximate Exhibition Space Best For Key Access Notes
COEX (Gangnam) 36,000–50,000 m² Large conferences, mixed events, city-center convenience Subway Lines 2 & 9; airport limousine Integrated mall, hotels, entertainment; busy traffic
COEX Magok \~7,452 m² exhibition + meeting rooms Airport-proximate meetings and mid-size exhibitions Airport Railroad & Line 9 (Magongnaru); \~15 km from ICN Connected hotel; growing Magok business cluster
KINTEX (Goyang) >108,000 m² Large-scale trade shows and exhibitions GTX-A, subway/bus; \~23 km from Seoul Highest capacity; new hotel and third hall developments

Logistics require careful planning because Seoul’s traffic can change quickly. From Incheon Airport (ICN), travel to COEX typically takes 50–90 minutes by car or taxi depending on the time of day; airport limousine buses are often smoother for groups with luggage. The Airport Railroad Express reaches Seoul Station in about 43–51 minutes, after which a subway transfer or short taxi ride completes the journey. COEX Magok is significantly closer—many groups reach it in 40–60 minutes via the all-stop Airport Railroad (the express does not stop there) or taxi. In Gangnam, vehicle staging space is limited, so professional ground operators recommend pre-calculated dispatch times rather than same-day estimates. Public transport is excellent once you have a T-money card: the subway is clean, frequent, and English-signed, while Kakao T is the standard app for taxis. For multi-city programs that include Busan or Jeju, factor in KTX or short domestic flights and arrange matching ground transfers at both ends.

Cultural etiquette shapes how smoothly an event runs. Korean business culture values hierarchy and formality, so seating charts, introduction order, and speaking opportunities should reflect rank. Key points include:

  • Exchange business cards with both hands and take a moment to read the card before putting it away.
  • Combine a slight bow with a handshake.
  • Wear conservative business attire.
  • Avoid direct public disagreement; handle sensitive points one-on-one.
  • Work with a local DMC or the venue’s protocol team for VIP arrangements, gifts, and meal seating.

Bleisure is now a core part of Seoul’s strategy rather than an afterthought. The city is rolling out the “Seoul, After Business” program aimed at MICE participants and their companions. During the large ICML 2026 machine-learning conference at COEX (expected around 15,000 attendees), organizers and the city offered short walking tours near the venue (including Bongeunsa Temple), evening experiences along the Han River, and dedicated companion itineraries covering palaces, markets, and museums. Similar options—Han River cruises or night views, traditional markets, K-pop related experiences, or simply time in the COEX Mall—fit easily into free evenings or the day after a meeting ends. Many hotels in the COEX and Magok clusters already package these add-ons.

Industry support continues to grow. Organizers can access incentives and consulting through the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Tourism Organization, particularly for events in strategic sectors such as AI, medicine, and technology. The Magok area is developing into a broader MICE cluster that includes COEX Magok, the new Seoul MICE Plaza (with meeting rooms, a summit lounge, and a digital nomad/workation zone), hotels, and nearby cultural sites like Seoul Botanic Park. Korea MICE Expo returns to Seoul in November 2026, offering a useful networking window for suppliers and buyers. Looking ahead, a major new sports and MICE complex in the Jamsil area is planned for completion around 2032 and will be roughly 2.5 times the size of current COEX, further expanding central options.

Practical next steps for planners include shortlisting venues based on group size and airport proximity, locking ground transportation early with experienced operators, building a short cultural briefing into the pre-event kit, and allocating at least one free evening or half-day for bleisure so delegates leave with a positive memory of the city. Seoul’s combination of scale, connectivity, and growing emphasis on post-business experiences makes it a reliable and increasingly flexible choice for international MICE programs.
