Choosing the Right MICE Venue in Seoul: A Practical Comparison for International Planners

Seoul has strengthened its position as one of Asia’s most reliable MICE destinations, supported by strong air connectivity, modern infrastructure, and a concentration of purpose-built and hotel-based venues. For international planners, the key decision is rarely “Is Seoul suitable?” but rather “Which venue cluster best matches the scale, format, and delegate experience of this specific program?”

The three most frequently evaluated options are COEX in Gangnam, KINTEX in Goyang (roughly 30–40 minutes northwest of central Seoul), and SETEC in southern Gangnam. Each serves a different segment of the market. Understanding their practical strengths helps avoid the common mistake of forcing a large exhibition into a central urban venue or placing a high-end conference in a location that feels disconnected from hotels and restaurants.

COEX

COEX remains the default choice for many international conferences and mid-to-large exhibitions. Located in the heart of Gangnam and directly connected to subway Line 2 (Samseong Station), it offers roughly 36,000 m² of exhibition space across four main halls and more than 50 meeting rooms. Its largest plenary configuration can accommodate up to approximately 7,000 delegates. The biggest practical advantage is the surrounding Coex MICE Cluster: three five-star hotels (including the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas and InterContinental Seoul COEX) connected by indoor walkways, extensive shopping, dining, and the Coex Aquarium. This density reduces the need for extensive ground transportation during the event and supports strong evening networking. Winter and summer weather extremes are also less of an issue when delegates can move between venues without going outdoors.

KINTEX

KINTEX (Korea International Exhibition Center) is Korea’s largest exhibition facility, with a combined exhibition area exceeding 108,000 m² across KINTEX 1 and KINTEX 2. Individual halls range from about 5,500 m² to more than 13,000 m², with high ceiling heights and floor loads of up to 5 tons per square meter—suitable for heavy industrial equipment. Meeting and ballroom facilities are extensive as well. The trade-off is location: it sits in Goyang, outside the Seoul city limits. While KTX and buses provide reasonable access, large groups usually require dedicated coach transfers. KINTEX excels for pure exhibitions, automotive shows, and government-level events where sheer scale matters more than walkable urban amenities.

SETEC

SETEC (Seoul Trade Exhibition & Convention) is a more specialized, mid-sized option operated by the Seoul Business Agency. It offers three exhibition halls totaling roughly 8,000 m² of dedicated space plus several seminar and convention rooms (largest around 300 seats). Its location next to Hangnyeoul Station (Line 3) keeps it convenient within Gangnam, and it is often chosen for government-linked, academic, or industry-specific exhibitions that do not require massive halls. Catering and parking are straightforward, making it efficient for events in the 200–500 range.

Emerging options such as Coex Magok (closer to Incheon Airport) and the future Jamsil Sports·MICE Complex (still under development, with completion targeted around 2032) will expand capacity further, but current planning should focus on the established trio.

Venue Comparison at a Glance

Venue Primary Strength Exhibition Space (approx.) Largest Plenary Capacity Best For Location Advantage Main Consideration
COEX Integrated urban MICE cluster 36,000 m² \~7,000 International conferences, mixed events Central Gangnam, hotel connections Peak pricing and booking lead times
KINTEX Scale and industrial exhibitions 108,000 m² Large (multi-hall) Major trade shows, heavy equipment High floor load, flexible halls Requires group transfers from Seoul
SETEC Mid-sized professional events \~8,000 m² \~300 Academic, government, specialized Easy Gangnam subway access Limited for very large gatherings

When selecting, also consider simultaneous interpretation capacity, loading dock access, and nearby hotel inventory. Peak seasons (March–May and September–November) require hotel blocks to be secured 6–12 months ahead for groups over 100 rooms. Planners who match the venue’s natural strengths to the event’s primary objective—networking density, exhibition scale, or cost efficiency—consistently achieve smoother operations and higher delegate satisfaction.
